L@tE Biography
L@tE is a continuous conversation between Porter and Frost which started in 1998. It began while Porter was working on the Living Earth Sculpture project, in Lincolnshire UK, between 1997-1999. At the same time Frost was working in Barisol, Bangladesh. Together their shared experiences at these locations brought about an understanding of communities and cultures affected by the ‘edge’. At this point the potential of the ‘edge’ became clear.
In 2000 Porter and Frost led a steering group discussion in liaison with Commissions East, The Wash Estuary Management Group and East Cambridgeshire LA21 to discuss the developing L@tE concept.
An experimental L@tE residency was developed by Frost at Wicken Fen National Trust Nature Reserve, Cambridgeshire in 2002. Both artists developed work on this residency with respect to their L@tE concerns.
Humanity’s interference with nature became a valuable discussion point for L@tE Porter and Frost’s began to appreciate and understand how climate change affects the edge of land and water, a transition space and in turn the affect this has on the communities it touches.
The continuing conversations Porter and Frost had with each other and a wider academic audience brought them closer to establishing a formal organisation which would act as catylyst for change.
In 2006 the Lateexchange website was established, with support from 3ev. It was with the support of Liverpool John Moore’s University social science departments actions of L@tE were fabricated. It is with thanks to The Norwich Gallery for hosting the first gallery collaboration of joint action by Porter and Frost.
