L@tE East of England: Wicken

Element 1 - Wicken Fen National Trust Nature Reserve, Cambridgeshire, UK - 2002

Materials: found on site, constucted and installed onto the fen and visitor centre

Ethos

The initial site for L@tE, conversations, walks and workshops took place over three weeks with visitors, researchers, site managers and staff. I have worked here for several years as workshop leader and artist, exploring the nature of fenland, seeing it in the context of international concerns for sustainable wetland. L@tE invited people from the worlds of visual arts, local councils and environment orgnisations to consider how they might address these concerns together.

Actions

I considered natural processes that had created the site, flooding and the building up of layers of natural material to make peat. The man-made structures of waterways to drain parts of the fen, aiming to keep a sustainable balance for all residents. The site is a centre for research as well as recreation, the elements created reflect the activities and transition from semi industrial peat cutting to contemporary interests in wildlife conservation and climate change.

Janette Porter worked as co-consultant for the structure and ethos of the project.
